If Conrad's intention is to draw a cordon sanitaire between himself and the moral and psychological malaise of his narrator, his care seems to me to be totally wasted because he neglects to hint, clearly and adequately, at an alternative frame of reference by which we may judge the actions and opinions of his characters.

It would not have been beyond Conrad's power to make that provision if he had thought it necessary. Conrad seems to me to approve of Marlow Ovviamente le accuse di Achebe hanno trovato solidi muri contro cui rimbalzare. View all 4 comments. Viviamo come sognamo: soli. Hard to believe I got so far in life without reading Conrad! Also hard to believe that this Pole, who didn't start speaking English until learning it from his fellow sailors in his late teens, ended up being far and away one of the ultimate masters of the language. The way he writes in "Heart of Darkness" is mind-blowing, and like no one else though the past years have seen countless people try. Others have said plenty about the story, so I will say nothing more than that I agree with them Hard to believe I got so far in life without reading Conrad!

Others have said plenty about the story, so I will say nothing more than that I agree with them except for those who don't like it, which is probably the same as merely not appreciating insanely good writing. Based on Conrad's own sailing experiences, I lost count of how many times those sailors should have ended up at the bottom of the sea.

Amazing tale, and told by someone who knows exactly how to tell a perfect story. And of course, being Conrad, there's much more than just a story here - there's a whole philosophy about youth, while he's at it. Typhoon or Lord Jim next? That is the question! Dec 28, John rated it really liked it.

Comparing it with the movie Apocalypse Now is unfair and misguided. True, they have the same central theme - a journey to the black heart of the world and also into the black heart of a man, Kurtz. But there the similarity ends. The book ends with the Narrator handing Kurtz's letters to his It's amazing to think that this was written years ago, and it's still fresh today apart from the occasional By Jove!

The book ends with the Narrator handing Kurtz's letters to his Intended and then reporting his last words as her name spoken aloud, when in fact Kurtz said "The Horror. The Horror. But most of all, how can you compare an extremely polished work of written literature, full of description and masterful prose, with a powerful hard-hitting filmic masterpiece which arguably says more about the pointlessness of war than the blackness within man and the world.

Probably me. Heart of Darkness is the big title in this set of three, but I personally find Youth - that is, an older man recollecting the misadventures of his own - the more affecting these days.
